Revisiting our old design works, we found this manual / experimental typography design poster. We cutted out and folded pre printed square to form a letter. We called it an out of the box poster (literally). Then we tought, why not create a half finished typeface? getting your hands dirty finishing it might be a unique experience. A Do-It-Yourself typeface.
The idea might be a bit radical, specially when you live in an instant world where everything is just a click away. Digital typeface is the pinnacle of desktop publishing. With .ttf and .otf files we cutt all the trouble of manually setting metal font letter by letter. Install – Type – Print become the new culture of typesetting.
The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) typeface is an antithesis to this practice. The idea was to type unfinished (and therefore illegible) letters. The letters will be needing some manual works to transform it into their final shape. The DIY typeface category is definitely not designed for bodycopy use, but we believe it provides us with endless possibilities of type experiment.
The original cutt out of the box poster was our internship poster in 2010 and it served us well. It attracts the right kind of talent. The poster works, the typeface works and we had a lot of fun doing it – hence we believe that our first DIY typeface will be a unique experience in type works. We believe this is the first time anyone attempts to digitalized a manual work typeface, hope we got this one right – we are so excited about the project. Project name: DIYfont schedulled for released on December 2013 / January 2014 along with it’s type manual book. We will keep you updated on this personal project.
