A Gallup poll found that only 26% of employees strongly believe that 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. A McKinsey survey of 12,000 managers indicated they consider “𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝, 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤” 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. An international employee survey found that 72% of respondents rated “𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤” 𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. While another survey found that 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟓% 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤. What do all these surveys have in common? Feedback. In a 360-degree feedback process, feedback is given anonymously and confidentially. But what happens when feedback is neither anonymous nor confidential? Our article explores the downfall when trust is broken.
